Dogs’ ear infections usually begin as allergies.

Have you noticed your dogs’ scratching his ear or shaking his head?
If you have seen signs of this, gently look into your dogs’ ear. See if there are scabs, puss or if the hair that should be white is now brown.
Smell the ear. A healthy ear will give off no odor. An infected ear will give off a strong odor and there will be a brownish discharge in the ear.
In some really bad cases, the dogs’ ears are almost completely shut because of swelling. Take you dog to the vet for cases like these.
Shaking of the head doesn’t necessarily mean that your dog has an ear infection. It could be something much worse and might need immediate treatment by a vet. Sometimes shaking of the head is indicative of illnesses that are quite serious.
For a common ear infection the Vet might treat the dog with a product of antibiotic cream.
